How to stay healthy (and active) during business travel

If you’ve been following our social media feeds, you know our team is in Anaheim this week at the American Occupational Health Conference (AOHC), so we know maintaining healthy habits while away from home can be challenging. We've pulled together some simple reminders on how we try to stay healthy and active during trade show travel.

Eat breakfast. Work trips can be hectic, but it’s important to fuel up at the beginning of the day to keep metabolisms going and stave off cravings. Since most hotels provide a variety of breakfast options, take a few minutes for a quick bowl of fruit, yogurt or cereal…and of course, lots of coffee! Just remember, bananas before biscuits and gravy.

Drink water. Dehydration can mimic the sensation of hunger, leading to unnecessary snacking and overeating. Stay hydrated by carrying water with you and drinking it throughout the day. Don't go nuts, just drink when you're thirsty and you'll be better off at the end of the day.

Stay active. While traveling, finding time for finding the gym can be difficult, but even a few minutes in the hotel gym is beneficial (and you can find travel workouts online if you're not sure what to do.) If you can’t squeeze it in, try simple things to keep you moving like taking the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator. Walk the trade show floor a couple of extra times (avoiding the candy dishes). Throw a pair of gym shoes in your bag and take the long way back to your room after the trade show floor closes.

Watch portion sizes. Eating out when traveling for work is unavoidable, and restaurants are notorious for huge portions. Split an entrée with a co-worker, ask the server if you can order off a kids menu, or request a lunch menu (which often features smaller serving sizes than the dinner menu.) And pay attention to the nutritional information on restaurant menus and try to choose lower calorie and carb options.

Here's to happy and healthy travels!
